Using Fuel Gel In Live Steam Engines: Full Guide

HOW TO RUN A WILESCO STEAM ENGINE WITH FUEL GEL

What You Need

Essential Items

Before You Start

  1. Read your engine manual first. Each model’s manual has safety and water-filling instructions you must follow.

  2. Ensure proper ventilation and operate on a heat-resistant surface (concrete, brick, or fireproof tray).

  3. Check that the engine has a safety valve installed – never run without it.

  4. Children should only use the engine under adult supervision due to open flame and steam hazards.

Step-by-Step Instructions for using gel fuel in your engine

1. Prepare the Boiler

  • Fill the boiler to the recommended level with distilled water, usually about ¾ full according to your model manual.

  • Close all valves and confirm no pressure.

2. Prepare the Burner

  • Slide your gel fuel burner tray/slide into place under the boiler.

  • Pour a small amount of gel into the tray — just enough to cover part of the tray bottom (don’t overfill). Wilesco recommends using gel fuel – only in engines with trays designed for gel fuel. This is because the old solid fuel burners have holes that the gel will escape from.

3. Ignite the Gel Fuel

  • Carefully light the gel with a long lighter or match. A blue-tinged flame is normal.

  • Do not lean over the flame and keep combustible materials well clear.

4. Build Steam

  • Allow the heat to raise pressure. You’ll see steam from the safety valve/whistle when pressure is sufficient.

  • Open the steam valve and gently turn the flywheel by hand to get steam into the cylinder. This helps start motion once there’s enough pressure.

5. Control & Run

  • Adjust steam regulator/valve to manage speed.

  • If steam stops or pressure falls, check gel fuel and water levels — do not refuel while hot or burning.

Shutting Down & Refueling

  1. Let the engine run out of gel, or extinguish the flame by gently sliding the tray from beneath the engine.

  2. Wait until all parts have cooled before cleaning or refilling.

  3. Dispose of any leftover gel safely. If it’s partially burnt, allow it to burn fully out on a heat-proof surface.

  4. Clean the burner tray after cooling.

Safety Tips

✔ Always operate in a well-ventilated area (to avoid fumes).
✔ Never refuel while the engine is hot or running.
✔ Keep flammables & children well away from hot surfaces and open flame.
✔ Ensure engine is stable – it shouldn’t tip or rock during operation.

Why This Matters

Wilesco specifies that their gel fuel is only for engines with correct gel trays. Engines that have solid fuel trays (with holes) need a different tray before using gel fuel.

Using the wrong fuel or tray can lead to poor combustion, soot, or fire hazards.
