Oxford Diecast Great Dorset Steam Fair 2014 Fowler 10 NHP Crane Engine ‘Duke of York’ (Dorset)
A tribute to one of Britain’s most respected engineering names, this official Great Dorset Steam Fair 2014 model celebrates the heritage of Fowler, a company renowned for producing some of the finest steam engines and agricultural machinery of the steam era.
John Fowler & Co. became famous for their robust and reliable traction engines, road locomotives, and steam-powered agricultural equipment, which played an important role in farming, construction, and transportation. The company also produced steam-powered crane engines, designed to handle heavy lifting duties in industrial locations, harbours, and construction sites.
This detailed model recreates the impressive Fowler 10 NHP Crane Engine No. 17106, built in 1928. The engine spent much of its working life with Marstons Road Services of Liverpool, transporting castings, dynamos, and ship’s equipment throughout Great Britain. In 1952, the engine was given the name ‘Duke of York’, although throughout its working career it was affectionately known simply as ‘the big engine’.
Following extensive restoration work during the mid-1990s, ‘Duke of York’ became a regular and much-loved performer at the Great Dorset Steam Fair, where it continues to showcase the power, craftsmanship, and character of Britain’s steam heritage.
This beautifully detailed 1:76 scale model is a fitting tribute to both Fowler’s engineering legacy and one of the most iconic surviving crane engines from the golden age of steam.
